Humpty Dumpty is a character in an English nursery rhyme, which was probably originally written as a riddle. It is one of the best known nursery rhymes in the English-speaking world. Though not explicitly described, Humpty Dumpty is usually portrayed as an egg. The first recorded version dates from the early nineteenth century and the tune from 1870. Its origins are obscure; several theories have been advanced to suggest original meanings.
