About This Song
Symphony No. 14, Movement 4: The Suicide This movement, which in my opinion, breaks the symphonic tone which linked the first three movements together in a single movement. The melody is championed by the soprano which is mirrored by a soloing contrabass. The start of the movement is a calm aria that seems to linger in a bleak reverie, based off the motif of "Three lilies" sung by the soprano. The strings come in to back the two and leads up to a climactic break, filled with a cold melody from the violins and violas which bring back the string countermotif in the 3rd movement. The movement ends similar to the third, with tolling chime anticlimax followed by an echo of the beginning motif and cello solo.
