I made some midi back in 2000 or 2001. At that time, I had a sound card that accepted an XG daughter board. This daughter board is no longer available. Also, Creative Labs has advised me that none of their cards that have midi ports actually work. So, how do I get started? I'd like to use sound fonts, not external voice synths. Am interested in Sonar Home Studio. Will Sonar HS be sufficient? But, most importantly, what sound card(s) should I consider?
Thanks. |

Hm...
I assume that with the XG daughter board you mean the Yamaha DB50XG.
That card needs the "Wavetable" port, indeed.
It seems that the latest sound cards with this connector are the "TerraTec DMX – Xfire 1024" and the "TerraTec SiXPack 5.1 +". Both of them should work with Win 98, ME, 2k and XP.
But still they don't have support for SoundFonts.
If you'd like to use SoundFonts and don't need the Waveblaster anymore, there are two options:
a) through software:
For example the free sfz Sample Player. It's a VSTi plugin for any VST compatible hosts, like Sonar.
b) through hardware:
Creative Audigy and X-Fi cards support SoundFonts. At least in Sonar PE you can load them straight in the synth section. I think in Sonar HS it's the same.
Audigys are limited to a 16-bit precision, while X-Fi cards can use SoundFonts with up to 24-bit. Unfortunately the X-Fis don't have a normal MIDI interface anymore (you would need the I/O-Drive).
So you should go either for a normal Audigy (SB0090) (NOT the software DSPs Audigy SE or Audigy LS) or for an X-Fi Xtreme Music (SB0460), if you need the 24 bit support. |
