Hey, I'm sure you guys (and girls) are tired of people asking for good audition songs and this isn't even that important, but I want to blow... them... away! It's for the company that I always audition for and always get casted at but until now, I've been known as the comic relief and I want to show them that I can sing and well... which I can. Plus, I'm starting at Fullerton College which is renowned (locally at least) for its theatre program and I imagine I'll need amazing audition songs for their upcoming productions as well.

Songs I'm considering:
- One Song Glory (RENT)
- Music of the Night (Phantom of the Opera, The)
- Down Once More (Phantom of the Opera, The)
- This is the Moment (Jekyll & Hyde)

I got a late start (16, I'm now almost 18) in the theatre business (I started off as a hardcore baritone around winter and somehow, several months later, I'm a (firstish) tenor! I honestly don't know how that happened), but I'm really loving it and hope to make a career out of it and need as much help as I can get, so any advice or recommendations you can give me are much appreciated.

Thanks and God bless.

Hopefully,
Naathan Phan

First of all you need to realize in musical theatre and opera there is no first or second soprano, tenor etc.. You are just a tenor. But you should be sure you are actually a tenor before you audition as one. Very good baritones have a highest note of G above middle C and a very rich lower register. And from a couple of the songs you listed you are still a true baritone and not a tenor a tenors highest note is usually a Bb or B above middle C maybe even a C above middle C. "This is the Moment" is a great song but is so overdone in auditions I wouldn't suggest it. Anything from Rent, Wicked or Phantom of the opera is overdone. Do something unique. I have a question before I make suggestions: Is this for a specific show because you should always do a song in the syle of the that show. Exp. if you are trying out for "Oklahoma" don't sing "Being Alive" from "Company" its a different style of singing instead sing "Were Thine that Special Face" from "Kiss Me Kate" Just let me know exactly what you are auditioning for.

Almost any song from any musical is good for first tenor. PLus it depends on what you are trying out for

For some reason the only one I can think of at the moment is "That Face" from "The Prodcers."

Firstly, there is such things as first adn second parts.
Thought i'd clear that up!
Secondly, I believe you are auditioning for Cyrano de Bergerac. Figure out what you want to be in the show, then you can decide. Relate your song to the character. It gives a boost.
I go to OCHSA, too.
You were great as Cogsworth! icon_biggrin.gif

To pianofreak:

Come on, give me a little credit. If I say I'm a tenor and ask for tenor songs, I'm probably a tenor. If I'm not, and I'm asking for tenor songs, I'll realize, "Shoot, these are too high." and they won't do me any good and both of us will have wasted our time. The reason the songs listed are baritone (primarily) are because, duh, I DON'T KNOW ANY GOOD TENOR SONGS! Hence, this post. Had I known good tenor audition songs, none of this would be here.

Warmed up, I can hit a high B-flat or B. I'm still working on that damned high C. I mean, I can hit it (and higher), it just sounds... crappy? no... Let's just say, you can tell I'm reaching for it.

To FHPmusicfreak:

No, not almost any song is good for first tenor. While I can hit all the notes to most songs, I don't feel it showcases my range, which is what I want to do at an audition. But, yes, it does depend on what I'm trying out for. I'll get to that in a second. Thanks for responding. Sorry about the residual indignance from replying to pianofreak.

To steel:

"That Face" isn't a tenor song as Leo isn't a tenor role, but it's definitely a good song. A little low at some parts for me, though. Thank you for the suggestion. I appreciate it.

To MistoMatthew:

Firstly, yeah, I thought so, too.

Secondly, I'm not auditioning for Cyrano de Bergerac, sadly. My schedule at this point doesn't allow for it... but I want to SO bad!

At the moment, I'm performing an audition piece for my Musical Theatre Techniques class at Fullerton College on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, I have a real audition at Broadway On Tour for John Blaylock's new one hour musical "Wonderland". He said, and I quote, "Sing anything you'd like. Character stuff is probably the best - but something that also shows off your voice. Show me a side of Naathan that I haven't seen. There's a challenge for you!"

I was thinking of dressing in drag and singing "Think of Me" thus fulfilling both criteria, but since it's a community theatre group for kids, I don't think they'd appreciate that and I do want to participate in the rest of the season...

I actually graduated from OCHSA this year.

Thanks, MistoMatthew, I'm glad you enjoyed my performance as Cogsworth... who are you?

Keep the suggestions and comments coming. My time draws ever nearer...

Sincerely,
Naathan Phan

Hey!First, good luck in your audition. Second, try singing a piece from the show that you are auditioning for, particularly a song that it sung by the part that you are auditioning for. This way, the judges know how exactly you would sound singing that style etc. let me kno if this helps. good luck!

Well... i'm a tenor myself and the songs you listed, although good are dreadfully overdone. Another thing someone mentioned that there is no such thing as first tenors in musical theater... well usually that is used to describe choral and ensemble vocal placements. There are however different styles of tenors for example lyric and dramatic... look on youtube and type in lyric tenor and dramatic tenor and you'll see the difference. Thought I would clear that up. Now also keep in mind that it's not always about range, but what kind of story you can tell during an audition. You can hit high Cs all you want to, but that doesn't help the casting person. They will see you and go, okay he can hit high notes but can he tell a story. Do what you feel comfortable with in an audition. You want to look good, and if they want to hear more later well then give it to them. Another trick that I got from my voice teacher who's on the national tour of "25th annual putnam county spelling bee" is to not always go in with what they are exactly asking for song wise. if they say bring in 21 measures of a musical theater song and there is a really good audition pieceyou have thats not musical theater but may fit the style of what you are going for then use it! Chances are it makes you stand out, a song is a song and as long as you get their attention and make them interested in you thats all that matters. GOOD LUCK!

For a first tenor (which yes, does exist in musical theatre) I would recommend "Streets of Dublin" from "A Man of No Importance" or perhaps "Bui-Doi" from "Miss Saigon", as both give an example of range, and most importantly offer emotional dynamic. It is advisable to match the song to the character you are auditioning for, but if you show emotional diversity in a song a director is much more likely to cast you in a lead role that demands diversity. Having said that, choose a song that speaks to you. If you feel it your audience will feel it, and if they feel it, you're in.

Take a look at

Anthem - Chess
Any of Archibald's stuff from Secret Garden
Prayer - Scarlet Pimpernel
She Was There - Scarlet Pimpernel
On the Street Where You Live - My Fair Lady
Later - A Little Night Music

In an audition situation, AVOID Music of the Night and This Is the Moment.

As has been mentioned before, look for songs similar in style to what you are auditioning for if not something actually from the show.

Best of luck with everything!
