This forum doesn't seem to be too active, but I am hoping someone can spot this and help me out.

At over-40 years old, I have decided I would like to learn to play the recorder. I have been looking around a bit at the different types, their ranges, and sizes, etc. I would like to use it for personal playing and eventually to sometimes accompany a small group who do not have very high range of voices.

Even the Alto's range still seemed a little high, but the tenor seemed too big of an instrument for my small hands. You can probably tell how green I am. Is is possible to play lowerer on the Alto?

I would be brand new at this. I don't want to purchase anything too expensive, but I don't want to buy a cheap plastic $3.50 one either as I am afraid I would not like the sound enough to be motivated to continue.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
wren

I play the oboe- one of the hardest woodwind instruments to play. I also play the recorder when i was 6. I wouldn't start with a plastic recorder. I would buy a yamaha, they aren't that expensive and they make a lovely sound. Once you play it for a while, you'll become used to the sound of the recorder and then you will understand fully whether it's right for you or not. Keep at it, even when you're having an off day and don't learn the notes then not play it for weeks because you'll just forget it again- I know!!
Hope my advice waw handy!!

Any music store that sells band instruments will probably have recorder books. The one I would recommend is the Yamaha Recorder Student. It has a good fingering chart and is fairly self explanitory. The important thing to know when you get a recorder is what the fingering system is. I would recommend the Baroque fingering system. By the way, just so you know, I am a high school band director and have taught recorders to beginning students. If you already know how to read music playing the recorder is easy.
